Openness and Adoption
with Guest Expert Toni Williams, manager of minority adoption programs at Spence-ChapinGuest: Toni, do you put kids and parents together?
Toni: Yes, but babies and parents. We work with moms who are late in their pregnancies.
Guest: They are not sure before then?
Toni: They come to us late, having told no one or few about the pregnancy. We get them into prenatal care and give them options counseling.
Guest: I can't imagine. This has to be REALLY difficult. Funny but when we adopted our daughter, the week we were to send in papers for another adoption I found I was pregnant, we now have our son.
Toni: I think it's probably the toughest decision that people have to make... or one of the hardest.
Guest: It has to be the hardest. Being an adoptive Mom, I cannot really understand but I'm sure what you see maybe we all should see.
Toni: Tough for all parties concerned i.e., to lose a family member and/or to lose the ability to conceive biologically.
Many thanks to all who participated. Names of participants and their family members have been removed for family privacy.
